The Neil C. Harrington Sr. Memorial Fund (NHMF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization was founded in 2006 to help fulfill Neil's wish:
"That somebody needs to raise enough money to find a cure for this horrible
disease, so no other family has to go through what ours has."
The Neil C. Harrington Sr. Memorial Walk was first held September 2006 in South Boston, MA. The two and one-half mile walk around picturesque DCR Castle Island proved to be very successful. We have continued to remember Neil by holding the Walk annually.
The success of these events has allowed us to support Dr. Patrick Wen's Brain Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. In previous years the Neil C. Harrington Sr. Memorial Fund has also supported The Dr. Peter Black Neurosurgical Research Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. Neil's memory was also honored by Gabe Margolis when he participated in the 2008 Boston Marathon for which all funds raised were also donated to DFCI to fight brain cancer. The Lawrence School Extended Day Program families have also been supportive of the fund through fundraising activities.
Given these difficult economic times, the contributions from the 2010 Walk were prosperous for the fund and DFCI. We appreciate all that is done by walkers, sponsors, supporters and volunteers to make these events everything Neil would have wanted them to be. Cancer never stops, so we can't either.
The Sixth Annual Walk will be held again at DCR Castle Island in September 2011. Please join us and take the steps toward more effective treatments and the cure of brain cancer. If you have any questions or require more information, email us through the contact page of this website.
